Why choose landscaping pebbles & gravels for your project?

Decorative pebbles and gravels are one of the most versatile landscaping materials you can use. They serve as an attractive, long-lasting alternative to mulch in garden beds, helping suppress weeds while allowing water to drain naturally.

Unlike organic mulches, they won’t break down or need replacing year after year, making them a cost-effective choice for both residential and commercial properties.

Pebbles are perfect for defining spaces in your garden. They’re also practical for high-traffic areas like driveways and pathways, where they provide excellent drainage and stand up to constant use without becoming muddy or worn.

Popular applications for landscaping pebbles

Our pebbles and gravels work beautifully across a wide range of landscaping projects:

  • Garden Beds & Borders – Use as an inorganic mulch that keeps weeds at bay and retains moisture around your plants. The variety of colours available means you can match your pebbles to your overall garden aesthetic.
  • Driveways & Pathways – Create durable, permeable surfaces that allow water to drain naturally while providing a stable walking or driving surface. Gravels are particularly popular for country-style driveways and informal garden paths.
  • Drainage & Erosion Control – Pebbles are excellent for managing water flow around downpipes, in drainage channels, or on slopes where erosion is a concern. They slow the water movement while allowing it to permeate the soil.
  • Feature Areas – Make a statement with decorative pebbles around water features, in pots and planters, or as ground cover in modern, minimalist landscapes. Different stone types can create dramatically different looks.
  • Dog Runs & Play Areas – Smooth river pebbles provide a clean, low-dust surface that drains well and is easy to hose down.

Choosing the Right Pebbles for Your Project

The variety of pebbles and gravels available at Cobblepatch Logan means there’s an option for every style and practical need. Here’s what to consider:

  • Size  – Smaller pebbles (10-20mm) work well in pots and tight spaces, while larger stones (40-60mm+) make bolder statements in garden beds and are less likely to be kicked onto lawns or pathways. Medium-sized gravels (20-40mm) are often the sweet spot for most garden applications.
  • Colour and style – The colour you choose sets the mood. Our range includes everything from natural river stones to crushed or tumbled stone in various hues. Visit our yard to see samples and get a feel for how they’ll look in your space.
  • Coverage and depth – As a general rule, aim for a depth of 50-75mm for garden beds to effectively suppress weeds. For pathways, 75-100mm provides a stable surface. Our team can calculate exactly how much you’ll need based on your project area—just bring us your measurements.

Installation tips for your landscaping pebbles

While pebbles are DIY-friendly, a bit of prep work makes all the difference:

  • Start with a weed barrier – Laying landscape fabric underneath your pebbles prevents weeds from pushing through and makes future maintenance much easier.
  • Edge it properly – Use garden edging to contain your pebbles and stop them migrating into lawns or garden beds. We stock a range of edging solutions to suit different styles.
  • Consider the base – For driveways and high-traffic paths, compact a layer of road base or crusher dust underneath for stability. For garden beds, you can lay pebbles directly over landscape fabric on existing soil.
  • Top up over time – Pebbles can settle or get embedded in soil, especially in the first year. Keeping a bag on hand for top-ups ensures your spaces always look their best.

Bulk or Bagged – You Choose

We understand that every project is different. That’s why we offer pebbles and gravel in both bulk quantities and convenient bags.

What is the difference between pebbles and gravels?

It is important that you know the difference between pebbles, gravel, and crushed rock so it is easier for you to decide what you actually want in your garden. Pebbles are round semi-polished pieces of rock made smooth by the continuous action of water on them. They are usually obtained near river or sea deposits and comprise of very hard pieces of quartz, chert, silica, and other minerals. Gravel is more or less just like pebbles. The difference is that pebbles are more attractive, well rounded, polished and with good colours whereas gravel is rather dull and irregular in shape.

Can Pebbles & Gravel be used as mulch?

Stones and mulch are often used together in landscaping to reduce weeds by blocking light to the plant. Each has its pros and cons, so making a decision between using mulch or stones requires a little research. The advantages of stone cover are that pebbles and gravels are a wonderful once-and-done endeavour. Unlike mulch, once installed pebbles and gravels don’t need to be replaced. While the upfront cost will be high, the long-term savings compared to the annual purchase of mulch is very significant. pebbles and gravels are great at suffocating weeds and show a better success rate at weed-prevention than mulch.

How do you stop weeds growing through pebbles & gravel?

Pebbles and gravels are an excellent ground covering. They come in different colours and sizes, can be used in many different areas, and suppress unwanted plant growth. However, some pesky weeds can grow quickly through pebbles and gravels. To get rid of weeds in pebbles quickly, you can apply weed killer, salt, or boiling water. In order to prevent future weed growth in pebble-topped areas, you can lay landscape fabric, install a border around your pebbles, or top your pebbles off until it they are 3–5 inches deep. There are even more drastic measures, such as preparing your soil with sand and/or mulch before laying landscape fabric and pebbles. With a little preparation you can set your pebbles and gravels up to successfully stop any weeds from growing through.

How thick should Pebbles & gravel be for landscaping?

Decorative pebbles and gravels can be used in almost any area of your yard as an attractive and functional ground cover. How thickly you lay the pebbles and gravels is up to you, however there are some guidelines that you can follow to help you work out the best thickness for your landscaping. The suggested depth of coverage varies according to the size of the individual stones. If the stone size is 1/2-inch or less, the suggested depth is 2-inches. Stones that are 3/4-inch to 1-inch should have a depth of about 3-inches. Stones that are 1-inch or larger should have a depth of 4-inches. You should also keep in mind that smaller stones may shift more in heavy rain.
